Read: Numbers 31-32
Marked: Numbers 31:8, They killed the kings of Midian with the rest of those who were killed–Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba, the five kings of Midian. Balaam the son of Beor they also killed with the sword.
These kings and peoples were the ones who had tried to have Balaam curse God’s people. At his counsel they had caused Israel to commit sexual immorality. Balaam was killed because of his counsel.
Sin, and its ways, are a powerful influence on the people of God and His word repeatedly warns against giving in to it and to crucify our sinful tendencies.
Balaam, as the mastermind of the seduction of Israel, died the death of a sinner showing it’s not actions alone but also the thoughts and intentions that should be judged and killed as well.
I’m reminded of Romans 1:32 which says, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them.
And Romans 8:13 says, For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
