Do Not Despise the Word…

Read: Proverbs 13-15
Marked: Proverbs 13:13, He who despises the word will be destroyed, But he who fears the commandment will be rewarded.

I read an article recently about a survey that was done a while ago. The survey found that of Americans identifying themselves as evangelical born again Christians, only 9% read their Bibles daily. I’m sure it is similar in Canada and other parts of the world.

The Proverb says that if we despise the word we will be destroyed. Is this the reason for so much angst and emotional trials being experienced by many Christians today?

What about financial difficulties, or relational problems, family breakdowns, and other societal issues?

There is much division in the church, a chasing after the world rather than the word. Where then is the reward?

I have heard Christian’s discussing current events, expressing various opinions, but very little, if any, consideration of the word of God and it’s wisdom on the subject.

One meaning for the Hebrew word for “despise” is, “to hold as insignificant”. If that’s true for Christians, if only 9% of us read God’s word daily, then this Proverb is a sad commentary on the church.
