Competing for God’s Blessing…

Read: Genesis 30-31
Marked: Genesis 30:6, Then Rachel said, “God has judged my case; and He has also heard my voice and given me a son.” Therefore she called his name Dan.

This is a strange chapter as these two women, sisters, both wives of the man God has chosen to bless and continue His covenant through, compete for Jacob’s affection.

Rachel was baren while her sister Leah bore a number of children for Jacob. So Rachel decides to give Bilha, her maid, as a wife to Jacob that Rachel might have children through surrogacy. And when Bilha conceives and gives birth to a son, Rachel ascribes it to a blessing from God.

Did God really have a hand in this? It seems unlikely because it was really the result of jealousy between sisters who have taken matters into their own hands instead of trusting God.

Forcing a solution to a problem isn’t faith and shouldn’t be misconstrued as a blessing from God. Instead, seeking God and considering His Word, and trusting in Him to resolve it would result in a real blessing from God instead of what arose from selfish actions.
