Discipleship Matters – Will God Help Me with Temptations?

Understanding the Message of the Bible: What are the temptations you have been facing? How have you experienced God’s help in overcoming them?

Dig Into the Bible:
In 1 John 2:15-16 we see three areas of sin:

Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that [is] in the world–the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life–is not of the Father but is of the world.

Someone summarized with these words: 1. The desire to indulge, 2. The desire to possess, and 3. The desire to impress. These three are common temptations for everyone but especially for the new person seeking to make a commitment to follow Jesus.

It is very important for each person in the journey to know 1 Corinthians 10:13,
No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.

Discover what the Bible says by answering the following questions:
1. What does this verse tell you about the heart of God?
2. How do you feel when you know that your temptations are experienced by all of us?
3. What is the temptation or temptations that you struggle with the most?
4. What does this verse tell you about the solutions to overcome temptations?

Apply God’s Word:
5. What steps can you take first to find out what is the way God has made for you to overcome?
6. What can you do this week to take steps toward victory in temptation?
7. What do you remember from Matthew 4:4 about how Jesus dealt with temptation?
8. How can you apply that in your life this week?

Digging Deeper:
1. What is the most important part of this lesson to you?
2. How do you see applying aspects of this lesson to your life?
3. When do you feel would be the best time to make that application?
4. What do you hear the Lord speaking to you about this right now?

Remembering His Covenant…

Read: Psalms 106-107
Marked: Psalms 106:45, And for their sake He remembered His covenant, And relented according to the multitude of His mercies.

How easy it is for me to forget a promise, to forget a responsibility I have towards someone else. But God never forgets.

Psalm 106 begins with remembering to give thanks to the Lord, for He is God. Yet, I can go days, weeks even, without doing that; forgetting God’s care, mercy, and grace on me. So did His people.

They are an example of what I could become should I turn away from God. They forgot God their Saviour (V21). They despised His pleasant at land, and did not believe His word (V24). They began to worship false gods (V33), and did not do what God had commanded them (V34).

They mingled with unbelievers, learned their works, served their idols, and even sacrificed their sons and daughters to demons, and shed innocent blood. The land was polluted with blood (V36-38).

It’s not hard to see the parallels to our own time. We have all but forgotten God. Can we truly expect anything less than God’s wrath? Thank God that He does not forget His promises and that we can receive His mercy. If only we remember Him and turn to Him.
