Read: 2 Samuel 13-15
Marked: 2 Samuel 13:5, So Jonadab said to him, “Lie down on your bed and pretend to be ill. And when your father comes to see you, say to him, ‘Please let my sister Tamar come and give me food, and prepare the food in my sight, that I may see [it] and eat it from her hand.’ ”
Jonadab, hearing of Amon’s love for his sister Tamar, instead of counselling Amon against such illicit desire, gives him advice on how he can be alone with Tamar. The end result of the plot is a young woman is brutalized and shamed for life, and her brother Absalom, giving into his own rage at her violation, commits murder against Amon.
It’s terrible the lengths some will go to fulfill their lusts. We should be careful who we choose as friends and counsellors. Anyone who counsels us to commit sin should be avoided.
The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it? (Jeremiah 17:9)
