Read: Nehemiah 8-10
Marked: Nehemiah 8:8, So they read distinctly from the book, in the Law of God; and they gave the sense, and helped [them] to understand the reading.
Some say they have read the Bible but never got anything out of it. But have they read it distinctly? The word means, distinguish, separate, or, to pierce.
We may try and read the Bible to see if it lines up with our opinion, beliefs, or philosophy, but that is trying to conform God into our image. We mustn’t conform God’s Word to our thinking. If the Bible disagrees with your thinking, don’t change the Bible, change your thinking.
Good Bible teachers give the sense and the understanding of the text. But there is one who is far and away the best Bible teacher we can go to; the Holy Spirit. As we read the Bible we should ask God to give us the sense, the meaning, and the understanding.
Jesus said the Helper, the Holy Spirit, will teach us all things (John 14:26). Let’s not lean on our own understanding but allow the Spirit of God to be our teacher.
