To Die and yet Live…

Read: John 11
Marked: John 11:43-44, Now when He had said these things, He cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come forth!” And he who had died came out bound hand and foot with graveclothes, and his face was wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Loose him, and let him go.”

Lazarus has died and has been dead for four days and was laid in a tomb. Jesus has come and Martha goes out to meet Him while Mary stays behind. Martha says, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died” (V21).

Later, when Mary heard that Jesus was calling for her, she arose quickly and came to Him (V29) and said, “Lord, if you had been here my brother would not have died.” (V32)

Jesus delayed His arrival so people would see that He is the resurrection and the life and he who believes in Him, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Him shall never die.

Each of us is already dead in sin though we may live. But to die and yet live, we must first come to Jesus. Eternal life is found only in Jesus. Though we will die physically, we will be resurrected because we came to Jesus.

At the tomb, Jesus called out the name of Lazarus, and he who had died came out (V44). We must come to Jesus when He calls. And He is calling us now. Each and everyone of us. Will we come?
