Read: Romans 8-10
Marked: Romans 8:5-6, For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those [who live] according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded [is] death, but to be spiritually minded [is] life and peace.
When Paul talks about living according to the flesh he’s not referring to the soft outer covering of the human body, but to human nature apart from God.
We are naturally given over to the influences of the world. Things like anger, envy, strife, and contentions come easy to us because these are what Paul calls carnal and we are by nature carnal. Apart from the Spirit of God we set our minds on these things (V5).
If our minds are on the things of the world we have a carnal mind and the carnal mind is at enmity (hostile) against God (V7). But if we are spiritually minded, that is, being mindful of the things of God, we have life and peace (V6).
Life and peace happen when we learn to crucify the flesh with its passions and desires (Galatians 5:24) in full surrender to the Lord Jesus Christ.
