Survey Says…

Read: Genesis 25-26
Marked: Genesis 25:33-34, Then Jacob said, “Swear to me as of this day.” So he swore to him, and sold his birthright to Jacob. And Jacob gave Esau bread and stew of lentils; then he ate and drank, arose, and went his way. Thus Esau despised [his] birthright.

An article in the paper one morning related the decline of religion in Canada. Only 68% of Canadians, fifteen and older, report having a religious affiliation.

The article stated Christian affiliation has dropped to 63.2% and that the United and Anglican denominations may not continue to exist beyond 2040 and, on average, the United Church is losing a church a week across Canada. There are many reasons for this decline but perhaps the greatest reason is that people are looking for authenticity and aren’t finding it.

In the article the reasons given for being a part of the church ranged from looking for structure, to religious or spiritual beliefs. One reason that was noticeably absent was wanting a relationship with Jesus.

Churches are selling their birthright for the lentil soup of easy believe-ism. It’s no longer about knowing God, obedience to His Word, and salvation, but about “me”. How does a church meet my needs? When a church fails to meet the need, the needy go elsewhere.

But isn’t knowing the Saviour the greatest need we all have? If a church doesn’t teach about Jesus, and a relationship with Him, it has lost its relevance.
