The Poison of Bitterness…

Read: 2 Samuel 16-18
Marked: 2 Samuel 16:21, And Ahithophel said to Absalom, “Go in to your father’s concubines, whom he has left to keep the house; and all Israel will hear that you are abhorred by your father. Then the hands of all who are with you will be strong.”

Ahithophel, once a trusted advisor to king David, had turned on him and aligned with Absalom. His advice to Absalom was borne by his bitterness towards David for how his granddaughter (2 Samuel 11:3; 23:34), Bathsheba had been violated by the king.

He advised Absalom to violate the king’s concubines in fulfillment of the Word of the Lord to raise adversity against David (2 Samuel 12:11-12).

Bitterness is sin and we will do sinful things and even cause others to sin as Ahithophel did to Absalom in encouraging his traitorous actions agains his father.

The result was suffering, division, and innocent women being abused by Ahithophel’s lust for vengeance and retribution.

Be careful to not be poisoned by bitterness and bound by iniquity.
