HOW DO I OVERCOME THE WORRIES IN MY LIFE:
How do you experience God in the midst of challenges? How do you incorporate prayer in those challenges?

A STORY:
Dan was an elder in the church and valued a growing church measured by numbers of people attending and income. He found himself worrying all the time about whether the church would make it. It was consuming his mind and heart. He felt so discouraged and wanted to quit. He was asking “Is there any way a person can see beyond the worries and troubles?” The following scripture was looked at.

Philippians 4:4-8 (NIV):

4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

HOW DO I BECOME MORE WHOLEHEARTED?:
What does it mean to do something with my whole heart? What does that look like?

A STORY:
In the earlier books of the Bible there is a story about a king who ruled during the time of the divided Kingdoms of Israel. The tribe of Judah and Benjamin were in the south and the other ten tribes were in the North were ruled by many kings. The King of the south who was well known was a king by the name of Hezekiah. Hezekiah was a leader who did all with his whole heart. What was it that made Hezekiah a whole-hearted leader?

2 Chronicles 31:20:

20 This is what Hezekiah did throughout Judah, doing what was good and right and faithful before the LORD his God. 21 In everything that he undertook in the service of God’s temple and in obedience to the law and the commands, he sought his God and worked wholeheartedly. And so he prospered.

WHY DO I HAVE SO MANY TRIALS IN MY LIFE?:
What has been one of your biggest, recent trials? How were you able to see the “good” in it?

A STORY:
Mario was facing all kinds of trials in his life. His job was challenging, but it was his boss that was hard to get along with. The lead foreman continued to be on his case for his work and continued to undermine his performance. Mario also struggled with temptations. It seemed like at every turn he was faced with sexual temptation, struggles with pride, and self-centeredness issues. The coach would hear him share these struggles.

James 1:2-18 (NIV):

2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. 6 But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7 That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. 8 Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do. 9 Believers in humble circumstances ought to take pride in their high position. 10 But the rich should take pride in their humiliation—since they will pass away like a wild flower. 11 For the sun rises with scorching heat and withers the plant; its blossom falls, and its beauty is destroyed. I NEED TO OVERCOME MY SELFISHNESS:
How has selfishness impacted your life? What is your experience dealing with selfish people?

A STORY:
Christopher has been a Christian leader in a local church in a southern town in the United States. He helped lead the core team in a church. He recently ran into a conflict with his fellow elders. He found himself acting like a child who could not get his way. He took the criticisms personally and began to villainize his fellow teammates. He was angry and wanted to leave this group of fellow believers. He found himself facing his selfishness and emotional immaturity. He wanted to know what he could do to be more loving.

DIGGING INTO THE BIBLE:
We looked together at this passage in Romans 12:9-21(NIV):

9 Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. 10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.11 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. 12 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. 13 Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality. 14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. 16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited. 17 Do not repay anyone evil for evil. HOW DO I GO ABOUT BUILDING PURITY IN MY LIFE:
What is evil? How does being around evil make you feel?

A STORY:
The teacher stated, “the statistics show that 60-70% of men struggle with addictions to pornography.” Because of the internet and easy access to these temptations there is a great struggle for purity. Everywhere a person turns today in our culture are attempts to exploit the sexual nature of the way a person is created. There are attempts to stretch our human values beyond the values of God’s creation and beyond what is moral. When this occurs, this is called immorality. Both men and women are tempted daily to violate the morals of the Bible. In most cases this action results in sadness and broken relationships. Sexual addiction has become an epidemic. In coaching we want to encourage health in all areas such as physical, emotional, relational and spiritual. However sexual health must be also examined, and the need to be able to coach that into people’s lives.

DIGGING INTO THE BIBLE:
1 Thessalonians 4:1-8:

As for other matters, brothers and sisters, we instructed you how to live to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more. 2 For you know what instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus. 3 It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; 4 that each of you should learn to control your own body in a way that is holy and honorable, 5 not in passionate lust like the pagans, who do not know God; 6 and that in this matter no one should wrong or take advantage of a brother or sister. The Lord will punish all those who commit such sins, as we told you and warned you before. 7 For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life. 8 Therefore, anyone who rejects this instruction does not reject a human being but God, the very God who gives you his Holy Spirit.

I STRUGGLE WITH PRIDE: How does pride show up most in your life? In your journey, what have you learned about humility?

A STORY:
Pastor Jose started his church 5 years ago, with 5 families. His warm spirit and teaching of the Bible has attracted many people, and the church now has 500 people attending. Pastor Joe looks around at other churches, and he enjoys a great feeling of success. He finds himself critiquing the other church leaders and speaks negatively towards other churches. He confesses this to his coach and wants help. He states, “I struggle with pride in my life.”

DIGGING INTO THE BIBLE:
Humility is a character quality that Jesus modeled, according to Philippians 2:5 in the verse, “He thought it not robbery to be equal with God but humbled himself and became a man….”, we are encouraged in our relationship with God that He delights in humility. What does humility mean? Humility is not to focus on self, but to focus on the value of others and see them as more important than ourselves. For example, Philippians 2:3-4 advises,

“Think not every man on his own things, but every man on the things of others.”

Jesus models his humility again in applying this priority. Moses modeled it in his care for the people of Israel. The book of James contains a great set of verses that give us a pathway to humility. Look at this pathway and then determine your current reality in pursuing humility. You may find a step that you want to focus on in your journey toward a deeper, more humble perspective. Let’s look at the steps.

Commands from James 4:6-11:

God is opposed to the proud but gives grace to the humble. Submit to God Resist the Devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners. Purify your hearts, you double minded. Weep mourn and wail. Let laughter be turned to sadness and your joy to gloom. Humble yourself under the mighty hand of God, and he will lift you up.

There seem to be several steps to Humility. Read through each of these steps. Begin by asking questions like the ones below to learn where you are in your journey of humility. Talk together about what obstacles stop you from moving to the next step. Discuss together the meaning of the term humility.

I DON’T HAVE ENOUGH PATIENCE:
What are the biggest challenges to you character? What steps can you take to grown in patience?

A STORY:
Anger flared once again because the coke can was left out. The father asked, “Why can’t they just put it in the pop can box?” Frustration over the lack of people’s care for little details can irritate nerves. This person’s conclusion along with other frustrations is that “They just don’t care.” “The church doesn’t care.” “The family doesn’t care.” “The wife doesn’t care.” He continued “I am losing my patience with people.” What does the Bible say to help a person know what to do about anger and how to build patience?

We suggested that he look at James 5:7-11 (NIV):
7 Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains. 8 You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near. 9 Don’t grumble against one another, brothers and sisters, or you will be judged. The Judge is standing at the door! 10 Brothers and sisters, as an example of patience in the face of suffering, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. 11 As you know, we count as blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.

A STORY:
A friend shared his disappointment in a relationship that he had trusted for many years. He expressed that he felt like he couldn’t love this person anymore. He felt that he did not have it in him. Yet, he knew he should love more deeply. He expressed “I WANT TO STRENGTHEN MY HEART FOR GREATER LOVE” It was suggested for him to look at 1 John 4:7-11.

Dear friends let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 11 Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.

HOW DO I BUILD HONESTY IN MY CHARACTER?:
In your experience, what have been temptations toward dishonesty? How have you been able to overcome them?

A STORY:
A coaching relationship was established with a man for a year. He had agreed that if there was anything the coach said, or did that was not helpful to the client that the client would be honest about those things. After a year, it seemed like the client was very pleased with the time of coaching and was very grateful. The coaching stopped and the client moved on. Later the client was speaking with another coach and reported how displeased he was with his past coach.

What stopped the client from being honest with his former coach?

Honesty is a critical quality to develop. How does one develop a standard of honesty? Let’s look at two passages of scripture.

Ephesians 4:25:

Therefore, each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body.

I WANT TO SEE THE QUALITY OF EXCELLENCE IN MY LIFE:
What ways do you want to excel in your life? How is that going?

A STORY:
In the 2016 Olympics, it was amazing to see each of the athletes demonstrate their vision for excellence. They might break a record, but they wanted more. They wanted to excel and break it again. Excellence means that a goal that they had reached in the past is not enough.

Excellence is when a person wants to EXCEL to the next level. This is not perfection but how you can improve. When evaluation is done in the various parts of life, the desire to improve is the quality of excellence. When excellence is present, evaluation is done in all areas of your life and then steps are taken to improve. These steps and success show the quality of excellence.
This is illustrated in the scripture below.

Now may our God and Father himself and our Lord Jesus clear the way for us to come to you. 12 May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else, just as ours does for you. 13 May he strengthen your hearts so that you will be blameless and holy in the presence of our God and Father when our Lord Jesus comes with all his holy ones?
