Walking Through the Bible: 1 Corinthians 15-16

Paul begins 1 Corinthians 15 with a clear proclamation of the gospel. We can make faith in Christ difficult, trying to keep lists of do’s and don’t’s. But in reality the gospel is simple and simply declares the finished work of Christ. We can’t add to it and we shouldn’t take away from it. Christ died for our sins. He was buried. He rose again. And He was seen. It is this simplicity that gives power to the gospel, but sometimes, like Paul, we can get hung up in the past.

Paul had been a persecutor of the church before he came to know Jesus. But he didn’t let what he once did keep him from doing what he knew needed to be done (V9-10). His hope was in Christ and His resurrection. Without this fact firmly grasped in our hearts our faith is weak and futile (V17).

The power of Christ is undeniable. Even death has been placed under His feet (V27) and though this body will eventually wear out, there awaits for us a glorious resurrection where corruption is made incorruptible (V42) and where death will be swallowed up in victory (V54). We must remain steadfast in our faith (V58).

As Paul ends his letter, he reveals the plans he has to come to them (1 Corinthians 16) leaving final exhortations to watch, stand fast, be brave, be strong, and let all be done with love (V13-14). This is a good reminder to us all.
