A Sound Mind…

Read: 2 Timothy 1-4
Marked: 2 Timothy 1:7, For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

Many times in Scripture God tells us not to fear, or, be not afraid, or some other variation of the same theme. For example, in Isaiah 41:10 God exhorts us to “fear not, for I am with you.” He told Joshua, “do not be afraid, nor be dismayed” (Joshua 1:9; 8:1).

Throughout Scripture we are exhorted to turn from fear and trust the Lord. Yet, fear at times, comes upon us all, but it is not God’s will that we should fear in any sense of the word including timidity, fearfulness, even cowardice.

Peace can be elusive if we focus too strongly on things we have no control over. But Isaiah 26:10 says we will have perfect peace when our mind is stayed on God, if we trust in Him.

God has given us a Spirit of power. Paul and his companions overcame fear, anxiety, worry, and we can too if our mind is stayed on God. Paul says, “We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed.” (2 Corinthians 4:8-9)

A sound mind is one which is under control and subject to moderation. Through Christ who strengthen me I can do all things when my mind is focussed on Him and not my circumstance or situation. In Christ we can indeed be free from a spirit of fear.

One thought on “A Sound Mind…

  1. Very true. I think fear is much more prevelent today than in my youth. It seems to be a constant fight. A key for me is to remember just how much God loves me. That alone can give me peace in those tough battles.
