Walking Through the Bible: 1 Timothy 1-3

Timothy was the pastor at the church in Ephesus which Paul had founded. The false doctrines of the gnostics and others were affecting the church, so Paul urged Him to remain in Ephesus and combat this and urge them to teach no other doctrine, nor give heed to fables and endless genealogies (1 Timothy 1).

As far as the law went it was not for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate, the ungodly and for sinners (V8-9). Paul knew this from personal experience. Formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and an insolent man, the gospel had changed him from what he was to a man saved by Christ (V12-17).

Timothy was not only to teach the word faithfully, but to exhort the church to prayer, not only for those who agreed with them, but for all men (1 Timothy 2). The gospel is for all. God’s desire is that all be saved and come to a knowledge of the truth.

Timothy was to establish pastoral leaders in the church to accomplish this (1 Timothy 3); leaders who had specific qualifications, men who were blameless, one women men, able to control themselves and their families and able to teach.

Likewise deacons, men who had proven capable, were to serve alongside, enabling the further work of ministry in the church. These roles strengthened the church by maintaining a focus on the deity of Christ (V16).
