Read: Leviticus 16-18
Marked: Leviticus 17:11, ‘For the life of the flesh [is] in the blood, and I have given it to you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it [is] the blood [that] makes atonement for the soul.’
The sacrificial system was enacted by God to teach the people of God that only blood could atone for sin. Blood is sacred. The life of every creature is in its blood. Blood is life giving and God wants us to know that.
Almost everything that was used in the practices of the tabernacle was first sanctified with blood. Aaron could not even minister until his own sin was atoned for through the blood of a sacrifice. Then, and only then, could he enter the Holy of Holies and present the blood of the sin sacrifice to God as atonement for the sins of the people.
But the blood of bulls and goats could never take away sin permanently (Hebrews 10:4) which is why the sacrificial system was a perpetual ordinance which foreshadowed a time when the perfect sacrifice would be made which would once and forever atone for sin.
As Hebrews 9:12 says, “Not with the blood of goats and calves; but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.”
Jesus Christ, is that perfect sacrifice who takes away the sins of the world forever.
